ACL 2013 Fri. 6:15pm Wild Belle

This Chicago-based brother-sister duo played the KCRW showcase at SXSW but for some reason KCRW, a public-radio station, funded by listeners like us, refused to let us in.  Badges and wristbands only.  So we didn't get to go.

Here's our second chance to see them.  I previewed them before SXSW with a different song that was very Blondie sounding.  This is a little more reggae but still reminds me of Debbie Harry.  That's a good thing.  Could be fun.

ACL 2013 Fri. 5pm Jake Bugg

I've posted about him twice before but it was the same song, "Two Fingers".  Based on this song it's pretty obvious that he's going for the Young McCartney sound.  Nothing wrong with that.

Other choices around this time are Austin (by way of New Hampshire) indie-rock band Okkervil River and Austin psychedelic-rock band The Black Angels.

ACL 2013 Fri. 4:30 Luella and the Sun

This is a new band out of Nashville that was here for SXSW and caught the attention of the NPR folks.  Since then they've been on NPRs Front Row, All Songs Considered, and World Cafe.  I  like their sound.   If we want to avoid the crowds at fun. and Local Natives this may be a nice bluesy alternative.

"Fly So Free" and "Universe in my Heart" on World Cafe

ACL 2013 Fri. 3:30pm Pinback

Even though they've been around for over 15 years and have a sizable following, I don't know much about this band.  Must be big with the young kids. I'm so out of touch in my old age.

I like what I've heard so far.  It's mainly a duo from San Diego with lots of musicians contributing to their albums over the years.  One site compared their sound to Rilo Kiley and the Shins.  Laid back/mellow stuff.

ACL 2013 Fri. 3pm Pacha Massive

Lots of choices in the mid-afternoon on Friday depending on what you want to hear:

Court Yard Hounds: if you want to see if Natalie Maines will show up and play a few Dixie Chicks songs with her old bandmates.

Holly Williams: if you want to see Hank Williams, Jr's daughter (and Hank Williams' granddaughter).

Smith Westerns: if you're into indie buzz bands.

Jimmy Eat World: if you still have the new KGSR on your pre-sets and your ears don't bleed when you listen to it.

I'll preview the band playing in the tent.  Based on my snarky analysis of ACL acts from 2008, Pacha Massive fits into the Wildcard slot.  Fun festival band with an international, world music bent.  They're a Bronx based duo, one Dominican and one Columbian.  They're called Latin Alternative.
