Mirror Travel

I guess today is local day.  This band's first album came out yesterday and they played their CD release party at Hotel Vegas.  Formerly Follow that Bird, it's the same members but new name and new label.  Indie garage pop.  They're out on tour now so we'll have to keep our eye out for another local show.

Mexico

Black Books

These guys were on KUTX yesterday.  I'd never heard them before.  Austin band that plays indie dream pop.  Only 2 EPs out so far.  Pretty good.  They're at CMJ this week and don't have any upcoming shows in town until November 30th.  I'd like to check them out.  Hopefully not a 1am show.

Edit: looks like they released their first album yesterday. So now 2 EPs and an LP.

ACL 2013 Sat. 7pm Kendrick Lamar

Some of the reviews for weekend 1 are coming in so I'll try and cover some bands I haven't posted yet.  This show was mentioned as a highlight.  The crowd is going to be very young and it's at the Honda stage which apparently was a poor decision.  Sounds like it was like the MGMT crowd there a few years ago.

If it's not crazy we may want to check some of this out.  I doubt I'll ever go see him so this could be our one chance to check it out.  We've seen Bright Light Social Hour and the Mavericks a few times.  Maybe catch a little Shouting Matches, then head over to Honda before moving up front for the Cure.

ACL 2013 Sun. 7:30pm Shuggie Otis

The big names are out in full force before the final headliner: Atoms for Peace for the Radiohead fans, Phoenix for the dancers, and Neko Case for the Americana fans. Stashed away at the tent stage is the man all those bands would probably rather see.  The saying "music ahead of it's time" is kind of a cliché now but it sure seems to make sense in this case.

Everyone knows "Strawberry Letter 23", a smash-hit when covered by the Brothers Johnson.  I'll post this instead but you really should go listen to all of Inspiration Information.

ACL 2013 Sun. 6:15pm Phosphorescent

This band played ACL in 2011 and were at SXSW this year, where we saw them at the Heartbreaker Banquet (one of the best days ever).  Most of his music is pretty mellow but their live show was much more upbeat.  I'm sure they'll be rocking for a late Sunday show.  Worth checking out.

ACL 2013 Sun. 5pm White Denim

In my opinion this is the best "newish" band out of Austin right now.  Well, their 2011 album "D" is the best recent album by an Austin band not called Spoon.  We just saw them at Blues on the Green but that environment doesn't lend itself to an attentive concert experience.  This may be just what I need in the late afternoon on a Sunday.

I'm going to post 2 songs to show the band's range.  The first is their "hit" and the second is an instrumental that kicks all kinds of ass.  Both are off of "D"

ACL 2013 Sun. 4:30pm JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound

We're hitting the heavy conflict times where ACL books good bands all against each other.  That means there are some tough decisions.  Divine Fits or White Denim or Toro y Moi? Or these guys?  Fortunately, we've seen them all before so we can decide based on the mood of the day.

We saw this band at SXSW last year and I enjoyed their set.  It started out as typical neo-soul like a lot of other bands recreating the James Brown sound.  Just at ACL alone we've got Charles Walker on Friday and Vintage Trouble on Saturday.  However, these guys branch out more and throw some wrinkles in the standard format.  I was especially pleased when they played this song: a cover of another Chicago-based band.

ACL 2013 Sun. 3:45pm The Lone Bellow

Another SXSW 2013 band.  Pretty country.  Good warm-up for the Eric Church fans.  Not sure they're my cup of tea but here's a song so you can judge for yourself.

You Never Need Nobody

ACL 2013 Sun. 3:30pm Grouplove

Here's another SXSW veteran.  We went to see them play Lovejoy's back in 2011 but the schedule was all messed up and they didn't know when they were playing.  The band was just hanging out by their van waiting. So we moved on.

In my preview back then I compared them to Cracker.  They have a new album out that's more dance-pop. Seems like a departure for a band formed by a bunch of artists on a commune in Crete that named themselves Grouplove.  Gotta pay the bills I guess.

Apparently their song "Tongue Tied" is quite a hit.  I like this song better.

ACL 2013 Sun. 2:30pm Noah and the Whale

Not a new band, I posted a song of theirs for the 2011 SXSW preview.  We also saw them at Parish in June of that year.  It was a really good show.

Other choices during this time are ACL veterans Dawes (who also put on a great show) and country-ish outfit out of Austin/Nashville Wild Feathers, who I previewed for this year's SXSW.  It's hard to go wrong with any of these options.

ACL 2013 Sun. 12pm Smallpools

There have been some schedule changes on Sunday due to D'Angelo cancelling his performance.  One band has been added and has taken MS MR's original slot.  They've moved to later in the day.

This is a hot band on Hype Machine right now so I guess ACL wanted to jump on the bandwagon.  It's a band out of L.A.  From the sound of this song I have a bad feeling we're about to be dealing with another Foster the People'esque wholesale hijacking of another band's sound.  I hope Passion Pit is getting royalties off this song.

Dreaming

ACL 2013 Sun. 1pm The Mowgli's

This is an L.A. band that plays happy peace/love music reminiscent of the 60s/70s era.  The schedule is packed around them so not sure I'll make their show.  They're also supposed to play the KGSR ACL broadcast at Threadgill's on Saturday the 5th (1st weekend) at 11:30.  That should be a fun 8 minute set.

This song is fun.

San Francisco

ACL 2013 Sun 1:20pm Roadkill Ghost Choir

Another must-see.  This band is so fucking good.  We saw them at Lambert's during SXSW.  Despite playing in front of about 20 people on a Wednesday at noon they still rocked.  Great band.  Go buy their EP.

Beggar's Guild

Thursday, September 12, 2013

ACL 2013 Sun. 12:45pm Typhoon

Haven't really followed these guys but they're an indie orchestra 12-piece ensemble from Portland.  They've been around for a few years and just released their latest album.  Kind of interesting sound.  More rocking and drums than Mother Falcon but I assume the idea is similar.  This song even has a female solo vocal and a group chorus singalong that Mother Falcon likes to use.  Could be worth checking out.

Young Fathers

ACL 2013 Sun 12pm MS MR

I previewed both bands playing at noon for SXSW (MS MR and Foxygen) so click on those links to hear the songs.  I like MS MR as a good option to start the final day of ACL.  They fill the slot held by Zola Jesus  last year.  This is a duo out of NYC.

"Hurricane" is their well-known song so here's another.  I like it.

Bones

ACL 2013 Sun. 11:15am Bear Mountain

Sunday morning is when ACL likes to showcase buzz-worthy indie bands before they break.  Last year it was Alt-J.  This year there are 3 bands that fit that category.  The first up is a duo out of Vancouver that blew up on hype machine when they released their first couple songs.  I expect they'll be playing Stubb's soon so it could be fun to see them in front of 10 hungover people not knowing what to expect (along with a few music blog nerds)

ACL 2013 Sat. 6:30pm Cherub

If you don't know the rest of the bands playing from 6-10pm on Saturday you may need to get out more.  The only two that aren't well-known are are Shouting Matches and Cherub.  Shouting Matches is a blues-rock side-project of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver).  Pretty standard blues/rock.

Cherub is playing the tiny BMI stage at 6:30.  It's a duo from Murfreesboro, TN that plays electro-funk/dance-pop.  I've liked what I've heard.  This could be a fun dance party.

I'll throw up two songs to kick off a Monday morning.  This first song is total old-school Prince while the 2nd song could be Prince playing with Empire of the Sun.

ACL 2013 Sat. 5pm Grimes

I'm not sure if Saturday at 5pm at ACL is the best place to see Grimes.  A much better place would be Lamberts, which she played in Feb. 2012. She also played Emo's East on my birthday last year.  Rant begins: that place is worse than the Austin Music Hall.  I went to two shows there but never again.  I saw two bands I've seen before who I know put on great shows: Foals and Father John Misty.  The sound was atrocious.  The whole experience was awful: parking, entrance lines, beer prices, beer lines, audience noise, and acoustics.  It takes an extra shitty venue to make a Foals concert seem average.  When they played La Zona Rosa on their last tour it was probably my top live show of that year.  Emo's East needs to die.  Move it back to 6th and Red River.  That place was a shithole but at least it was a great place for live music.  Now it's a shithole that ruins live music.  End rant.

Most people will be ready to rock at 5pm so they'll probably head to Joy Formidable.  I like her ethereal synth-pop so I'd like to check her out.  A good band to see if you're planning on seeing Passion Pit at 6pm.  (I'll be at Wilco of course).

ACL 2013 Sat. 4:30pm Lissie

The next artist is proof that I'm old.  Apparently she's quite popular with the younger crowd.  She's also pretty popular in Europe.  Her songs have been in shows like "Grey's Anatomy", "90210", "One Tree Hill", "Melrose Place", and "So You Think You Can Dance".  Haven't seen any of them.  I like what I've heard so far though.  This song is good.

When I'm Alone

ACL 2013 Sat. 4pm True Believers

There are only a few bands that are a must-see during ACL.  If you're from Austin, this is one of them.  I love this comment off the ACL page:

"I worry about the youth who will bear witness to this relentless onslaught. Seeing the True Believers live can do things to a person that may never be undone...THE BEST LIVE BAND TEXAS HAS EVER PRODUCED"

Originally formed in the early-80s, True Believers included the triple-guitar threat of Alejandro Escovedo, his brother Javier, and Jon Dee Graham.  They were known for their incredible live shows.  Record label issues kept them from greater success but they are legendary in Austin.  They reformed last year for a tribute concert and blew everyone away.  Thankfully for those of us uninitiated, ACL convinced them to play again.

This is going to be at the tent stage.  Bring earplugs.

No Soundcloud links so here's Spotify.

ACL 2013 Sat. 4pm Portugal. The Man

After Junip are two ACL veterans and one Austin supergroup.  I'll start with Portland-based (by way of Alaska) Portugal. The Man.  They've got 7 albums out and come through Austin regularly.  They played ACL in 2010, too.  Never did much for me but their latest album was produced by Danger Mouse so it may be worth seeing how that worked out.  This song is pretty good.

Purple, Yellow Red and Blue

ACL 2013 Sat. 3pm Delta Rae 3:15pm Little Green Cars

I'll combine the two bands playing opposite Junip into one post.  These songs are a great juxtaposition of love songs.  Well, unrequited love songs.

Little Green Cars is from Dublin.  Their song is the guy's side of the story.

Delta Rae is a band mainly from North Carolina.  They play the girl's side of the story.  It's brutally honest.

ACL 2013 Sat. 3pm Junip

There are 3 good choices playing in the 3pm hour so I'll preview them all but in reality there's no way I'm missing Junip.  I love these guys.  We'll need to get up close to the stage since their mellow sound can be drowned out by all the talkers, especially at the Honda stage around the beer stand.

So great.

ACL 2013 Sat. 2:30 Valerie June

Playing on the BMI stage is Valerie June, a multi-instrumentalist/singer/song-writer from Memphis.  Her 1st major album was produced in part by Dan Auerbach.  Pop/blues/folk/alt-country.  A mix of everything.  NPR loves her.  Expect big things.  I'll include 2 songs I liked.

Wanna Be On Your Mind

Twined and Twisted

P.S. She's on Letterman tonight.

ACL 2013 Sat. 2pm Electric Guest

Playing opposite HAIM is an L.A.-based band that had a lot of buzz before SXSW due to the fact that their album was produced by Danger Mouse.  Kind of nu soul, indie pop.  This song reminds me of Broken Bells.

American Daydream

Monday, August 19, 2013

ACL 2013 Sat. 2pm HAIM

There are two bands playing at 2pm that I'm interested in checking out.  They both were at SXSW and got lots of hype.  This one has taken off so I'll start with them.  It's three sisters from L.A. that play retro-pop in the Lindsey Buckingham-era Fleetwood Mac style.  They are expected to be huge so it looks like things are going according to plan.  This should be a crowded show.

This song is closer to Miami Sound Machine but it's apparently a big hit for them.

Falling

ACL 2013 Sat. 1pm Autre Ne Veut

I will not be seeing this band as I'll be at Reignwolf but I like it.  It's the moniker of Arthur Ashin and he plays pop/R&B.  He's compared to Yeasayer and Bon Iver.  I hear a little Bee Gee's influence in there, too.

Also playing at 1pm is a female duo out of L.A. called Deep Vally who play Led Zeppelin inspired blues rock.

ACL 2013 Sat. 12:15pm Mona

Playing opposite Dan Croll is a band getting lots of attention from all the right places.  They've played Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Conan, Leno.  They've opened up for Kings of Leon and it's easy to see why.  They're a perfect match.  Anthem arena rock.  If catchy brit-pop isn't your thing you may want to venture over to see Mona.

ACL 2013 Sat. 12:15pm Dan Croll

I got shafted trying to see Dan Croll at SXSW so hopefully I'll get to see him this time.  On Wednesday of SXSW I left Lambert's at 12:35pm and rushed over to the East side just to see him play at Cheer Up Charlie's.  The schedule online and the posters at the venue said 12:40pm start time.  I got there at 12:45 and he had just finished.  I was pissed.  And Sweating.  No way he just played 5 minutes.

Looking forward to this.  Great brit-pop.  This song has gotten lots of airplay.  Deservedly so.

From Nowhere

Monday, August 12, 2013

ACL 2013 Sat. 11:30am Parquet Courts

Playing opposite Hundred Waters is a band of Denton, Texas natives that now call NYC home.  They have one song, "Stoned and Starving",  that sounds just like Sonic Youth.  This song reminds me of Modern Lovers.

Borrowed Time

Friday, August 9, 2013

ACL 2013 Sat. 11:30am Hundred Waters

First up Saturday morning is a band we just missed at SXSW.  I previewed them and we were even at the Tap Room for their showcase Wednesday night.  Unfortunately, we left right before they played at 11pm.  Let's see if we can get there by 11:30am this time.

Nice mellow stuff.

Boreal

ACL 2013 Fri. 7:45pm Purity Ring

This is a fitting warm-up act before Depeche Mode.  We've seen them twice before, at FFF and SXSW. (Correction: my memory failed me.  We've only seen them once.  Didn't see them at SXSW.)  Nothing wild or extraordinary live but the music is great.  Chillwave is a nice name for it.  They hail from Canada.

One other lesser-known act playing on Friday that I enjoyed was JD McPherson, who plays old-school rockabilly with a little piano and horns mixed in.  There are others I'm sure I missed but it's time to move on to the Saturday schedule...

ACL 2013 Fri. 6:15pm Wild Belle

This Chicago-based brother-sister duo played the KCRW showcase at SXSW but for some reason KCRW, a public-radio station, funded by listeners like us, refused to let us in.  Badges and wristbands only.  So we didn't get to go.

Here's our second chance to see them.  I previewed them before SXSW with a different song that was very Blondie sounding.  This is a little more reggae but still reminds me of Debbie Harry.  That's a good thing.  Could be fun.

ACL 2013 Fri. 5pm Jake Bugg

I've posted about him twice before but it was the same song, "Two Fingers".  Based on this song it's pretty obvious that he's going for the Young McCartney sound.  Nothing wrong with that.

Other choices around this time are Austin (by way of New Hampshire) indie-rock band Okkervil River and Austin psychedelic-rock band The Black Angels.

Taste It

ACL 2013 Fri. 4:30 Luella and the Sun

This is a new band out of Nashville that was here for SXSW and caught the attention of the NPR folks.  Since then they've been on NPRs Front Row, All Songs Considered, and World Cafe.  I  like their sound.   If we want to avoid the crowds at fun. and Local Natives this may be a nice bluesy alternative.

"Fly So Free" and "Universe in my Heart" on World Cafe

ACL 2013 Fri. 3:30pm Pinback

Even though they've been around for over 15 years and have a sizable following, I don't know much about this band.  Must be big with the young kids. I'm so out of touch in my old age.

I like what I've heard so far.  It's mainly a duo from San Diego with lots of musicians contributing to their albums over the years.  One site compared their sound to Rilo Kiley and the Shins.  Laid back/mellow stuff.

ACL 2013 Fri. 3pm Pacha Massive

Lots of choices in the mid-afternoon on Friday depending on what you want to hear:

Court Yard Hounds: if you want to see if Natalie Maines will show up and play a few Dixie Chicks songs with her old bandmates.

Holly Williams: if you want to see Hank Williams, Jr's daughter (and Hank Williams' granddaughter).

Smith Westerns: if you're into indie buzz bands.

Jimmy Eat World: if you still have the new KGSR on your pre-sets and your ears don't bleed when you listen to it.

I'll preview the band playing in the tent.  Based on my snarky analysis of ACL acts from 2008, Pacha Massive fits into the Wildcard slot.  Fun festival band with an international, world music bent.  They're a Bronx based duo, one Dominican and one Columbian.  They're called Latin Alternative.

Don't Let Go

ACL 2013 Fri. 2:30pm Shovels & Rope

What a difference a year makes.  Last August we saw this duo at tiny Saxon Pub.  Since then they: were a hit at SXSW, did an ACL taping, played Letterman, made the festival rounds, were nominated for four Americana Awards, and are now playing Austin Ventures stage at ACL Fest.  Not a bad year.

Definitely check these guys out.  They are both great musicians and take turns drumming and strumming but the guy is unbelievable.  I think he plays like three instruments all at once at times.

Their well-known song is "Birmingham" which can be found everywhere so I'll share another.

O' Be Joyful

ACL 2013 Fri 1:30pm Thao and the Get Down Stay Down

Even though she lives in San Francisco it seems like Thao Nguyen is always in Austin.  We've seen her play a few times in the last couple years, both at SXSW and as an opening act.  I think she's even headlined a few shows in town.  I guess she's got a strong following here.  Her music suits itself to Austin.

Indie pop is the best description of her sound.  Toe-tapping pop. This is from her new album.

Holy Roller

Monday, July 29, 2013

ACL 2013 Fri 1:20pm Desert Noises

I don't know much about these guys but they're playing the Austin Ventures Stage, which always seems to have a solid lineup of bands.  Friday is no exception.  I could spend all day at that stage on Friday and be happy.

The first two bands on Friday are The Preservation and Sons of Fathers, two expected breakout bands from Austin.  Desert Noises is from Utah and were here for SXSW.  A nice indie folk sound.  This song is very Fleet Foxes.

Oak Tree

ACL 2013 Fri 1pm Savages

This all-female punk band from London had a lot of buzz at SXSW and have been on a roll ever since.  They've played all the big festivals. Serious Siouxsie Sioux sound.  Say that three times fast.

Husbands

Thursday, July 25, 2013

ACL 2013 Fri 11:15am The Orwells

Playing opposite Wild Nothing (and local band The Preservation, who I have still yet to see) is a Chicago pop-rock band with a pretty good sound.  They have a new album coming out soon.  This song sounds like a Pixies/Strokes mashup.

Who Needs You

ACL2013- Fri. 12:45pm Widowspeak

Right after Wild Nothing is FIDLAR, who I previewed back in 2012 for SXSW.  Guitar-rock/punk.

Skipping ahead to 12:45 on Friday is another band from SXSW 2012 that I previewed, Widowspeak.  I compared them to Mazzy Star.  More dream pop for early attendees.

The Dark Age

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

ACL2013 Fri. 11:15am Wild Nothing

The ACL schedules are out. I'll focus on the weekend 2 schedule since that's the weekend we'll be attending.  First up on Friday is Wild Nothing, a dream pop outfit that is the moniker of Jack Tatum.  He's from Blacksburg, Virginia.  Nice.

He played Coachella as well. A great way to start the weekend.

Jake Bugg

The ACL lineup is out.  I won't be previewing for awhile but here's a test to try out Soundcloud.  Spotify requires a subscription to listen on mobile devices so maybe this will work.  I'm not sure all the artists will be on Soundcloud but we'll see.  There are apps for iphone and Android and it appears to be free.

Jake Bugg was at SXSW and is getting airplay with this song.  A big hit in the UK:

Two Fingers

Friday, March 29, 2013

Chvrches

This band from Scotland was a big hit at SXSW.  They're coming to Mohawk June 5th.  Tickets on sale this morning.  Their new EP is streaming on Pitchfork.  It is excellent.  The last song, a remix of "Recover", is great.  For fans of Metric/Phoenix.

Big Acts

As you know, I have a love it/hate it opinion about big acts showing up at SXSW.  On the one hand, it takes away buzz and conversation from the bands trying to make a name for themselves.  SXSW is supposed to be about discovering new acts.  On the other hand, I like that all the big acts suck most of the publicity away from smaller acts so I have a chance to get into showcases.  The more people standing in line for 2 hours to see Diddy the less are trying to get into the showcase I want to see.

This year has your typical big acts once again.  Here is a rundown of some of them:

Depeche Mode

Natalie Maines

Dave Grohl along with Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Lee Ving of Fear, Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour, Chris Goss of Masters of Reality and Alain Johannes are slated to take the stage for the show at Stubbs, with The Meat Puppets as their opening act.  Whew.

Green Day

Justin Timberlake?

Diddy, of course.

Smashing Pumpkins?

Iggy and the Stooges.  Again.

Nice Cave and the Bad Seeds

Meat Puppets

The Specials

Vampire Weekend

...and probably a few surprises.

Jake Bugg

Another option for Saturday is the Rolling Stone party at La Zona Rosa.  Bands include Free Energy, Gus and Scout (at the Rolling Stones party? who would have guessed.), Surfer Blood, and Jake Bugg.

The next British star to hit the states, this is a young kid (19 yo) that just blew up in England.  His debut album came out in England in October and went straight to number one.  It's easy to see why.  This song reminds me of Johnny Goudie.  Beatles/pop sound.

Two Fingers

Indians

Another option for Saturday is Waterloo Records, which has a strong lineup once again.  It has Ra Ra Riot, Dawes, Civil Twilight, The Zombies, and Indians among others.

Indians is the moniker of Dane Søren Løkke Juul.  Mellow stuff.  He's also playing the Pitchfork party and the Paste Party so he's got a high profile this year.

Carelakers

Great Peacock

Also playing Saturday at the Stage on 6th is this duo from Nashville.  Kind of an Avett Brothers sound.  They're also playing the Friday day party at Whip-In and Thursday at Lucy's Retired Surfer bar party, both of which include the District Attorneys.

Take Me To The Mountain

Kelly Hogan

Now the Saturday day parties.  A good option is the Paste party at the Stage on 6th.  It has Field Report, Eric Burdon, Ozomatli, and Kelly Hogan, among others.

Kelly Hogan has been around for years, singing on her own as well as backing up such luminaries as Drive By Truckers, Neko Case, and Mavis Staples.  This year may be her "breakout" year.  Lots of buzz for her latest album.  Good Americana sound.  She's also playing the Bloody Mary Morning party at ACL, which could be cool, and Twangfest at the Broken Spoke on Thursday.

Dusty Groove

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Kodaline

Friday has lots of choices for day parties.  The biggest names are at Waterloo all day: Billy Bragg, Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Alt-J, The Mavericks.  Wow.

The Filter party at Cedar Street also has some good stuff:  HAIM, The Neighbourhood, Wild Belle, St. Lucia, and Haerts.  Of course, that is always packed so would have to get there early.

This year I may try to hit some of the radio shows in the mornings, either KUT at the Four Seasons or KGSR at the W.  This band is playing on Friday on KGSR, but at 6am.  Doubt I'll be up there then.  They're from Dublin and seem to have buzz.  For the Coldplay fans.

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside

If we stick on South Congress Thursday Jo's/San Jose has some good acts all day.  This band has lots of buzz going into 2013.  She's from NC but the band now resides in Portland.  Nice rockabilly sound.

They play at noon.  Also playing are Nikki Bluhm and the Gramblers and Billy Jo Shaver.

Party Kids

Gliss

On to the Thursday day shows.  My first choice is the Heartbreaker Banquet if we can make it work.  Another option is the Home Slice party.  It has Roadkill Ghost Choir, On an On, High Highs, Telekinesis, Young Galaxy, and Gliss among others.  I like their 2-stage setup which allows for continuous music.

Gliss is from Denmark but now resides in L.A.  They're a KCRW favorite.  Sound a lot like their Danish brethren Raveonettes.

Weight of Love

The Wild Feathers

This is one of the other bands playing the Filter party on Wednesday.  I think they're poised for breakout status.  They've got an Austin connection but are now in Nashville.  It includes Taylor Burns and Preston Wimberley who used to be in local band Noble Dog.  Not much out there but they're signed to Warner Bros., have CAA as their agent and have already toured with Paul Simon.  Album comes out in April so get ready.  Here's an interview with one of the members on their founding.

I like this song.  Good country rock sound.

The Ceiling

Guards

The Paste party at the Stage on 6th is one we've attended in the past.  This band is playing there at 1pm. It's the moniker of Richie Follin, the brother of Madeline Follin of Cults.  He also plays at Clive Bar at 4pm.  There are lots of good bands playing the Clive/Lustre Pearl Filter shows so that's an option instead of the West 6th cluster.

This song has some similarity to Cults.  A little Psychedelic Furs in there, too.

Ready to Go

Jesca Hoop

Also on Wednesday is the annual Guitartown kickoff party at Mother Egan's Dogwood.  This year it has expanded to Molotov, too.  Lots of bands.  I'll highlight someone playing across the street at J Blacks, though.  Jesca Hoop is from Northern California and has toured with the likes of Andrew Bird and Elbow.  She's gotten airplay on KCRW and has been around awhile.  This is the first I've heard of her and I like it.  Reminds me of Neko Case.  She plays at 2:00 on Wednesday.

Born To

Pickwick

Time to look for the day parties.  Wednesday at Frank is the C3 party so of course they've got some good bands.  At noon is Roadkill Ghost Choir which is my must-see.  At 12:50 is Pickwick out of Seattle.  I previewed them last year pre-SXSW.  They're getting some buzz this year.  They put out an EP of covers and that's the only thing on Spotify so here's a cover of a Richard Swift song with Sharon Van Etten on vocals.

Lady Luck

Baauer

This is NYC DJ Harry Rodrigues.  He's arriving at SXSW on the heels of his massively successful song/meme.  He's playing a Friday showcase at Scoot Inn.  I doubt we'll catch him but it gave me a reason to post this.

Make sure your sound is on. Enjoy.

Tumbleweed Wanderers

Another fallback option for the group on Friday is our regular spot at the Tap Room.  It's hosted by Jambase and they seem to curate good showcases.  The first act is Tumbleweed Wanderers out of Oakland.  They play bluegrass/folk/indie stuff.  I like this song.  What would happen if Michael Franti joined the Allman Brothers.

Take It Back

Thursday, February 28, 2013

Roscoe Bandana

Since Friday night is usually when we all try to go out together I doubt a group will want to venture into the Red River chaos.  A good option, with music more in line with the group, is Javelina on Rainey Street.  It has Hollis Brown, who Leana likes, bluegrass from The Giving Tree Band, and this band from Mississippi.

Good Americana/country-rock.  Should be a fun show.

Time to Begin

St. Lucia

Speaking of Brooklyn, St. Lucia is Jean-Phillip Grobler.  Originally from South Africa, now in Brooklyn.

The Thursday showcase at Empire Automotive is all Neon Gold (Passion Pit) artists. Thus the pop sounds.

This song sounds like a throwback to 80s pop ballads.  I'm thinking A-ha.

All Eyes on You

Sir Sly

Now the Friday showcase choices.  I'll start with the one at Empire Automotive.  This has Haerts, Haim, St. Lucia (who I'll post shortly), and Sir Sly, among others.  Good pop bands.  Should be a fun show.

Sir Sly is a trio from where else: LA.  This seems to be the year of LA.  One year it was Brooklyn, another it was Australia.

Anyway, this reminds me a little of Yeasayer, a little of Foals.  A little more poppy, though.

Ghost

Lake Street Dive

If we want to avoid the crowds and chaos of Red River on Thursday we can try the Creekside at the Hilton Garden Inn.  More mellow stuff, too.  The first act is Shonna Tucker, formerly of Drive By Truckers.  There's no music for her anywhere I've found and she just formed a new band called Eye Candy.  However, her showcase is listed just as her.  So don't know what to expect.

The second band to play is from Boston.  Kind of jazz/pop.  This song got some radio airplay.  The third act is Missy Raines, who is kind of  jazz/bluegrass.  A nice mellow evening if we want it.

Hello?/Goodbye!

Terraplane Sun

If we don't want to do Mohawk or Red 7 we can try Empire Automotive, across the street from Red 7.  This showcase is more mellow.  It's got pre-superstar Lianne La Havas and Terraplane Sun, among others.

These guys are from L.A.  This is a nice chill song.  Reminds me a little of Dan Dyer.

Ya Never Know

Cayucas

This would be my #1 choice if it wasn't at Red 7.  It's all ages so it's always packed and the line to get in is ridiculous.  Plus, it's a dump.  But this is the Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguar/Dead Oceans showcase.  And it's Thursday so we will only be slightly exhausted by then.

The outdoor showcase has Bleached, Foxygen, Unknown Mortal Orchestra (at 1am), and Cayucas.  It's the moniker of Zach Yudin out of California. This song sounds like Beck.

High School Lover

Baio

Another option for Thursday is the showcase at Blackheart.  It has Emma Louise, Gepe, and Baio, among others.

Baio is Chris Baio, bassist for Vampire Weekend.  This is his side project and leans more electronic.

Sunburn Modern

Pacific Air

After Wake Owl at the Mohawk on Thursday is this band from Southern California, hence the name.  It's two brothers.  They don't have an album out yet but the hype is high for them.

Float

Wake Owl

Now the Thursday showcases.  One option is Mohawk.  Local Natives and Cold War Kids play the Midnight and 1am slots so I doubt we'll last for them.  However, some of the earlier acts are good, including Solid Gold, who we saw two years ago at Rusty's one SXSW morning.  Free Champagne morning.  It's made up of the guys who were/are part of GAYNGS.  I liked them then and wouldn't mind seeing them again.

The first act on the bill is Wake Owl, the moniker of Colyn Cameron out of Vancouver.  He's also playing the KGSR morning show at the W.  Nice sound.

Gold

Field Report

The next option for Wednesday is at the Stage on 6th.  It includes Diamond Rugs, John McCauley and Friends, Heartless Bastards, and Field Report.  A bourbon-fueled hootenany.

Field Report is the most mellow of that lot.  It's the moniker of Wisconsin native Chris Porterfield (the band name is an anagram of his last name).  His first album was on many best-of lists last year.  I got it with my Xmas gift certificate to Waterloo based on that.  I'm not in love with it, although it has some good songs.  This is one of those.

Incommunicado

Hundred Waters

One option if we can't get into Haven (assuming that's our first choice) is the Tap Room.  It includes Keep Shelley in Athens, Poolside, and Hundred Waters.  A more mellow, synth-laden showcase.

Hundred Waters is from Gainesville, Florida.  This is a nice song.

Wild Belle

Also on Wednesday is our normal tradition: the KCRW showcase at Haven.  It includes Toro y Moi, Atlas Genius, Ra Ra Riot, and Wild Belle, among others.  Kind of a stacked lineup.  I hope they let in cash customers this year.

Wild Belle is a brother-sister duo from Chicago.  Their first album on Columbia Records is coming out in March.  This song has a Deborah Harry sound.

It's Too Late

Bastille

Tuesday is light on showcases so there's not much more to preview.  The Parish has a good showcase of local Austin bands that is a good backup.  No need to discuss them.  We've seen them all before.

I'll head to Wednesday.  One option is Club de Ville, which has The Neighbourhood, Half Moon Run, and Bastille, among others.

Bastille is a band out of South London signed to EMI Records.  This is an okay song.

Flaws

The Lone Bellow

Time to begin the showcase analysis.  Things start on Tuesday this year.  One option is the Blackheart, a new place on Rainey St.  That area has tons of showcases this year so it may be better hanging out around there than the chaos that is Red River.  The only downside is that most of the bars are small so it may be hard to get in.

Anyway, this showcase has Houndmouth at 8, Lone Bellow at 9, Jason Isbell at 10, and Spirit Family Reunion at 11.  I doubt we'll make it much later than that but Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers are the last band on the bill.

The Lone Bellow is a band out of Brooklyn (Park Slope) that plays traditional southern country/folk.  It's mostly mellow.  They're getting lots of critical praise.  Their album just came out in January so expect to hear more from them as they get airplay.

You Can Be All Kinds of Emotional

The Last Royals

Might as well end the day with another 80s -ish song and end the week with "Friday Night".  No, it's not an Old 97s cover.  This is a duo from Brooklyn.  No showcase scheduled yet and no day parties, either.

Friday Night

Gold Fields

A little 80s sound for you.  Gold Fields is out of Australia and it looks like the publicity machine is strong for them.  They're playing Jimmy Kimmel next week and are signed to Astralwerks (Beth Orton, Bat for Lashes, Air).  Their showcase is the Aussie BBQ on Saturday so if you want to see them we'll have to look for a day show.

Dark Again (Lights Out)

Cheers Elephant

Next up is a band from Philadelphia.  Apparently their live shows are pretty fun.  This song has some quirkiness mixed in with old-fashioned rock-n-roll.  They don't have a showcase listed yet.

Leaves

Telekinesis

Today I'll wrap up the general music sampling with some of the better songs I've heard so far.  Next week I'll try to focus on some specific showcases we could attend.  After that I'll look at some of the better day parties.

First up is a band that played ACL on Saturday back in 2011.  I previewed them/him here.  As you know,  we didn't make it to ACL on Saturday or Sunday that year. Still angry.  Oh well, now we have another chance.  This is a new song and it looks like he's still got the talent for making great pop songs.  This has a riff that reminds me of the Cure.

Please Ask for Help

Atlas Genius

Final Band You Should Know for the day.  They're from Australia and seem to have lots of hype behind them.  I haven't listened to anything other than this song but it's their hit. They're headlining Emo's East in April with The Neighborhood so expectations are high.  This song is good but I don't love it.  Just seems a little too catchy.  Maybe their other stuff is more to my liking.

Trojans

Bernhoft

Another Band You Should Know.  Well, it's one guy:  Jarle Bernhoft.  I think he even plays all the music on his albums.  He's from Oslo, Norway and it looks like 2013 could be his year.  He's playing Bonnaroo and is set to play some of the bigger day parties. Doesn't sound like a Norwegian.  His big song is "C'Mon Talk" but it was too much for me so here's a slower song.

Stay With Me

Family of the Year

Here's another band that has recently been on the late night circuit.  They were on Jimmy Kimmel last week and are on Conan tonight.  They've got members from Wales, Florida, and California but are now based in L.A.  I wasn't too impressed with the song they played on Kimmel but this song isn't bad.  Maybe I'll like them more live.

Hero

Gus and Scout

Today I'll post some Bands You Should Know.  I'm not sold on the sound but there's buzz around them for various reasons so you may think otherwise.

First up is Gus and Scout, a male-female folk duo.  That's Gus Wenner (son of Jann Wenner)  and Scout Willis (daughter of Bruce and Demi).  Celebrity watchers will fill up their showcase.

Don't Bother You Much

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Keep Shelley in Athens

This band played FFF Fest at noon.  Due to a ticketing issue we got there late and only saw one song.  They're from Greece (a full day without an LA band!).  I'd like to be able to see them play more than one song this time.

Our Own Dream

Humans

Here's a dance song.  A mix of LCD Soundsystem and New Order.  This is a duo from Vancouver.  The second half of this song really shows the James Murphy influence.  They don't have a full album out yet but they've gained quite a following.

avec mes mecs

Amtrac

Next up for synth day is the moniker of Caleb Cornett from Kentucky.  His showcase is Thursday at Haven with The Crystal Method.

Fame or Shame?

Ryan Hemsworth

Today I'll post some guilty pleasures of mine.  These will be on the synth-driven side.  First up is a producer from Halifax.  A really cool song.

Three Hours In

Nikki Bluhm and the Gramblers

Final band for the day.  This band from San Francisco sounds like The Band with Linda Ronstadt at the helm. For Kim, obviously.

Little Too Late

On an On

One for Leana.  This reminds me a little of Yeasayer.  This is a trio that formed after the breakup of Scattered Trees.  More on that here.  They're from Chicago and Minneapolis and look to be playing the Paste day party at the Stage on 6th but I'm not sure what day.

Ghosts

Hurray for the Riff Raff

Another one for Kim.  The singer is originally from the Bronx but the band is based in New Orleans.  They played SXSW last year.  Good bluegrass sound.  The only showcase is at 1am on Wednesday so we'll have to look for a day show.  Old Settler's needs to book them.  They've been around awhile and have played here before, including at Hole in the Wall.  I'm sure I've heard them on KUT but this song is new to me.

Look Out Mama

Night Beds

Night Beds is the moniker for Winston Yellen, a 23 year-old from Colorado Springs but now in Nashville.  This song is straight-up Whiskeytown, which is a good thing.  He's signed to Dead Oceans (Bear in Heaven, Destroyer) so he's got strong backing.  Showcase is Thursday at Red 7 as part of the Dead Oceans/Jagjaguar/Secretly Canadian showcase.  Could be a good one to check out.

Ramona

Roadkill Ghost Choir

This song is for everyone.  Not much publicity for them but damn this is a great song.  Banjo, Hammond organ, even a little trumpet.  They're from DeLand, Florida which is between Daytona and Orlando.  I'd really like to check them out.  I've listened to their E.P. and it reminds me of My Morning Jacket.  It's very, very good.  My #1 band to see now.

Beggar's Guild

Wildcat! Wildcat!

Speaking of GAYNGS.  Here's one for Leana.  This song has got that 70s Supertramp sound mixed in with modern sounds a la MGMT. Believe it not, these guys are from L.A.

Mr. Quiche

Foxygen

This is for Kim.  Mix in the Animals, old Roxy Music, Joe Jackson, and bits and pieces of the 60s and you get Foxygen.  They're from L.A. and have been signed to Jagjaguar (Bon Iver, GAYNGS) so expectations are high.  They'll be all over SXSW.

Make It Known

The Neighbourhood

This one is for Leana.  The momentum is building and they are about to blow up.  They're opening up for Atlas Genius April 24th at Emo's East but I have a feeling it will be like seeing The XX open for Friendly Fires.  They won't be opening for long.  They're out of L.A.

Female Robbery

Friday, February 15, 2013

Hollis Brown

This one is for Leana.  The band is out of NYC but sounds more like NC.  A little Ryan Adams, a little Deer Tick.  Fittingly, John McCauley sings on some of their songs.  Maybe they're part of the "friends" in his new band.

Gypsy Black Cat

Half Moon Run

This one is for Kim.  Some CSNY with Mamas and Papas thrown in.  They're opening for Of Monsters and Men at Stubbs in June, too. (tickets on sale tomorrow)  They're at a lot of the high-profile day parties so expect big things.

Full Circle

Aloe Blacc

This song is for Leana.  It has been out for a couple years so you've heard it I'm sure.  Straight up Bill Withers.

I Need a Dollar

Houndmouth

I think I'm a pretty good judge of my followers' musical tastes.  Both of them.  To test that theory I'm going to post songs I think will be enjoyed by them.  First up is Kim.  Tell me this isn't right up your alley.  These guys are from New Albany, Indiana.  I'll keep an eye out for the day parties they're playing.

Penitentiary

In The Valley Below

Another Valentine, this one to the other female in our household.  This is a duo out of L.A.

Peaches

John McCauley & Friends

To start off today here's a little Valentine present for my wife.  John McCauley always seems to make it down to SXSW in some iteration: Deer Tick, Middle Brother, Deervana... This year he's coming as John McCauley and Friends.  I bet whatever he plays will be great. (H/T OEB for this video)

Blondfire

Another L.A. band.  This is a brother-sister duo that's about to break out.  See this article (Title: Blondfire=En Fuego) for all their coverage.  They just signed with Warner Brothers and are opening for Foals on their upcoming tour.

This song reminds me a little of Joy Formidable.

Where the Kids Are

Poolside

Might as well stick with L.A. bands.  This is a duo that would fit right in on KCRW.  Perfect name.  Great music for chilling by the pool.  These guys are playing the Filter party at Lustre Pearl but it's badges only.

Next to You

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Haim

The hype is huge for this band.  A trio of sisters from L.A., they topped the BBC Sound of 2013 poll as the most promising act of the new year, have been touring with Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, and Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, and recently signed to Polydor records.  It's expected they'll have a full album out soon.

This song has a Fleetwood Mac sound.

Falling

High Highs

This is a really nice song.  The band is from NYC and based on this article I bet they'll play the KEXP showcase at Mellow Johnnys.  Their first album just came out so we'll be hearing more from them.  Perfect sound for an early afternoon at ACL.

Flowers Bloom

MS MR

Autotune has been borrowed from the pop stars who can't sing and co-opted by indie bands looking to accentuate already great voices.  It started with Polica last year, was used by Cat Power in her latest, and now can be heard in this song from NYC duo MS MR.  This could easily be mistaken for Polica but it's still good.  I think this band will be at some of the bigger day parties.

Hurricane

Monday, February 11, 2013

Haerts

This song is so new it's not even on Spotify yet.  It's the only song by this band but it's marvelous.  Just a great pop song.  Expect a lot of hype if these guys can deliver a whole album like this.  KEXP has taken notice, and they're getting lots of hype in New York, too.  They're based in NYC but from Germany, England, and the U.S.

Wings

Vintage Trouble

We saw these guys last year during SXSW at the Stage on 6th before Of Monsters and Men.  They were unknown then but really won the crowd over.  Great party band.  It's no wonder they've been opening for The Who on their current tour.  Here's a video of them on Conan with the legendary Booker T. Jones on organ.

 Here's a song from Spotify:

Blues Hand Me Down

2012 SXSW alumni at the Grammys

All of these bands were relatively unknown last year when they arrived at SXSW.  Some had lots of hype behind them when they arrived, as I said in my previews about them (see links).  The last year was still a whirlwind for them all, culminating in Grammys performances.

Ed Sheeran

fun.

Alabama Shakes

Lumineers

Which bands from this year's SXSW will be playing at the Grammys next year?  I have some guesses.  Stay tuned...

Friday, February 8, 2013

MØ

Might as well post one more Danish singer.  She doesn't have an album out and nothing is on Spotify but this single is making waves. She's being compared to Purity Ring and Twin Shadow.

Pilgrim

Fallulah

We'll finish up the week with another SXSW alumni.  The moniker of Maria Apetri from Denmark, I previewed her last year but we didn't get to see her.  Always trying to catch those Danish bands.  This is a poppy dance number a la Oh Land.  She's also compared to Bat for Lashes and Florence and the Machine.  I'd like to see her this year.

Out of It

Thursday, February 7, 2013

Emma Louise

Continuing with the female singers, Emma Louise is from Brisbane and played SXSW last year.  Not much else out there other than this song was on "Greys Anatomy".  This song is good.

Jungle

Lianne La Havas

I expect you may know this one but she's new to me. She's from London and had a very good 2012. She was named on the BBC Sound of 2012 list, toured with Bon Iver, has played with Alicia Keys, and had her album named the iTunes album of the year. Whew. She played the Tonight Show Tuesday and now she's making her way down to our little festival.

Don't Wake Me Up

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

ZZ Ward

Here's another SXSW alumni that is on the verge of breaking out.  She's from Oregon but has been in L.A. making a name for herself.  Since SXSW last year she put out a full album, hit the late-night shows, had songs featured on TV shows, and has been touring with Delta Rae.  She's got major label backing so  the hype will continue.

Put the Gun Down

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Elle King

I guess I'll make this week all-female week.  This singer is the daughter of a successful comedian/movie star but grew up with her mother in Ohio.  I won't tell you who her father is.  Listen to the song and decide if you like her before you find out.

Kind of an Adele sound.  She played SXSW last year but was low profile.  Since last year she signed with a major label, played the late night shows and has toured with the likes of Of Monsters and Men and Michael Kiwanuka.  All that and she only has an EP out.  Expect more visibility when an album is released.

Playing for Keeps

Monday, February 4, 2013

Josephine

Here's someboy that's going to be a hit at SXSW. She's from Manchester and has been getting lots of press in England. Here's one article from the BBC.  Kind of a jazzy pop sound.  Nice.

I Think It Was Love

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Savages

One more British band and we'll call it a day.  This is not my style anymore but the guitar and beat reminds me of Dead Kennedys and her voice is so Siouxsie & the Banshees. Savages is an all-female post-punk band from London.  They're getting coverage on blogs and are playing Coachella so there will be lots of buzz during SXSW.  Their looks won't hurt.  Check out the video for this song.

Husbands

Chvrches

We'll stick with Northern Great Britain for this preview, too.  This is a band from Glasgow.  This song was chosen for the BBC Songs of 2013 list.  They opened for Passion Pit on some of their tour last year.

Little Green Cars

Here's a nice country-rock song from a band out of Dublin.  Here's a good article on them in the Guardian.  Looks like they're being groomed to follow in the footsteps of Mumford and Sons.  Probably will want to catch them soon.

The John Wayne

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Gregory Alan Isakov

A little Ryan Adams sound for you.  Well, maybe a lot.  This guy was born in South Africa, raised in Philly, and now lives in Colorado.  I haven't listened to anything else but this song is pretty.

If I Go, I'm Goin

My Jerusalem

Here's a band based here in Austin now.  An indie-Supergroup made of of members of Bishop Allen, Polyphonic Spree, Twilight Singers, and Great Northern.  Not a bad combination.  This song is pretty good.  I heard it on KUTX last week so I guess they're getting some airplay.

Shatter Together

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Fossil Collective

Just heard this one and liked it.  It's a duo from Leeds.  I think this summary from last.fm states it pretty well: " Their first recordings saw them taking inspiration from classic albums by Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac and Simon and Garfunkel and suggested comparisons with more contemporary artists such as Fleet Foxes, Midlake and Bon Iver."

Listen.  You'll like it.

Let it Go

DIIV

This is the band that will probably be most difficult to see.  Their album was on many top10 lists last year and they're already scheduled for Coachella.  I'm sure they'll be at ACL, too.  I really like the album. It's a mix of Real Estate, REM, and Joy Division.  I'd like to check them out.

Doused

Dan Croll

First on the playlist is Dan Croll. He's from Liverpool and his sound is indie pop.  Paul McCartney gives him a thumbs up.  He's on the Slacker "Artists to Watch in 2013" as well.

A new system: SXSW playlist

I'm going to try something different this year.  Instead of posting mp3s of songs with my previews I'm going to link to the song on Spotify.  I will also update a Spotify playlist of all the songs as I preview them.  This way you can listen to one song at a time or listen to the whole stream whenever you want.  Since Spotify is available on everyone's phone and computer hopefully this will make it easier.  It also keeps me out of trouble with the copyright police.

So, here is the link to the Spotify playlist.  You should be able to click the link and subscribe to it in Spotify.  The is also on the sidebar to the right. Just click and start listening.  One drawback to Spotify is that I can't sort the playlist based on preference so the order is just random.  I'll highlight some of my favorites here, though.

You can stream and/or download the songs for offline listening (I think you need a premium account to do that, though).

Here's an example of a link to a song.

Below is the song using Spotify in the post:

SXSW 2013 Kickoff

I know, it's getting closer.  I'm looking for some motivation to start the process so I thought I'd try the crowdsourcing method this year.  I need your help.  Here are a few spotify playlists I've found that have music from bands playing SXSW 2013.  Feel free to listen and when you find a band/song you like let me know so I can share it.

SXSW Picks- This one looks pretty good.

SXSW Best of the Best

SXSW Vol. 1

SXSW Vol. 2
