Recap

With SXSW canceled we watched live streams of bands in lieu of going to actual live shows.  It has lasted 5 weeks and going.  Our favorite show, isolounging with Amanda Shires, ended yesterday after 30 straight days.  That is a sign it's time to post the first list.  To be continued...

LCD Soundsystem: American Dream

Now that we have Amazon Music streaming we haven't been buying as many CDs.  Harder to share so instead I'm going to try posting albums I like here so you can take a listen.  First is pretty obvious but I wanted to post this song that's further down the tracklist.  Really good.  It's the one that got Rae spontaneously dancing on Labor Day Weekend.

Here's another album while we wait for the ACL lineups to come out.  I'll wait until the time slots are announced before getting started unless they take forever and we start running out of time.

This is the moniker of Michelle Zauner who spent some time in bands in Philadelphia before returning home to Eugene, Oregon to care for her mother.  While there she recorded her own music and released an album.  She was signed by Dead Oceans for this her second album.  It's getting great reviews.

I like the 1st half of the album but the 2nd half kind of slows down.  The first song reminds me of War on Drugs.

She's playing Barracuda on Friday September 15th.  Probably won't go on until midnight or later.

Road Head

RIPS

Hearya, a blog I follow, reviewed the debut album of this Brooklyn band and gave it thumbs up so I gave it a listen.  I like it.  Mellow guitar sounds like old REM, Modern Lovers, and Real Estate. The song attached has a Joy Division sound to it.  Good stuff.

They are on a limited tour and Austin is one of their stops  They'll be at Cheer Up Charlie's this Wednesday.  Lots of music that day.

Kelly Lee Owens

I really like this debut album from Kelly Lee Owens out of Wales.  Best I've heard this year.  Gorilla vs. Bear listed it as one of the top albums of the year (so far) so I decided to give it a listen.  Probably a little electronic for you but it's a nice mellow sound.  She's out on tour but I don't see any Austin dates as of yet.

Sideonetrackone just posted this singer from Oakland that I thought I'd pass along.  I love this song.  I like the video, too.  She just released her debut EP and is out on tour.  No Austin dates yet.

Old Settler's 2016: HoneyHoney

I know you like to get home quickly on Sunday but I got stranded there last year and had a really good time at the campground stage.  We don't have to stay all day but it may be worth it to stick around to see this band at noon.

This is a duo out of L.A.  Their last album was produced by Dave Cobb who also has produced the last albums by Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, and Chris Stapleton.  Suffice it to say everything he touches has been turning to gold.  We'll see if this band is next.

Old Settler's 2016: Sierra Hull

Two weeks away.  We know most of the bands playing and there are only two stages so it's not hard to jump around.  However, this musician is playing at 1:30pm on Saturday.  We don't usually get to the main festival grounds that early so we may want to make an exception for this.

Sierra Hull was a child mandolin prodigy that is now in her 20s.  NPR really likes her new album, calling it "a stunning coming of age album."  I like this song.

Mirror Travel

I guess today is local day.  This band's first album came out yesterday and they played their CD release party at Hotel Vegas.  Formerly Follow that Bird, it's the same members but new name and new label.  Indie garage pop.  They're out on tour now so we'll have to keep our eye out for another local show.

These guys were on KUTX yesterday.  I'd never heard them before.  Austin band that plays indie dream pop.  Only 2 EPs out so far.  Pretty good.  They're at CMJ this week and don't have any upcoming shows in town until November 30th.  I'd like to check them out.  Hopefully not a 1am show.

Edit: looks like they released their first album yesterday. So now 2 EPs and an LP.

This band from Scotland was a big hit at SXSW.  They're coming to Mohawk June 5th.  Tickets on sale this morning.  Their new EP is streaming on Pitchfork.  It is excellent.  The last song, a remix of "Recover", is great.  For fans of Metric/Phoenix.

Residual Kid

This isn't ACL related but wanted to share this band that played Stubb's inside last night after the Devo/Blondie shows.  It's a power trio of kids 12-14 that totally rocked.  Blew out the speakers (and my eardrums).  C3 needs to book these guys.  The kid playing lead guitar on this song is normally the drummer and he is great. He also plays bass.  The drummer in the video is usually the lead singer and guitarist.  The bassist also plays mean drums and guitar.  They would switch instruments between songs.  They're 12-14 years old!

Dead Can Dance

We interrupt the ACL previews to highlight a band playing tonight at the ACL Moody Theater.  This is one of my bucket list bands I never thought I'd get to see.  I'm so psyched to see this show.  I started listening to them during my Goth phase I mentioned in an earlier post but they haven't toured in Texas since 1995.  This is quite a treat.

They are known for Lisa Gerrard's vocal prowess and she has been quite successful on her own, doing  soundtracks ("Gladiator") and multiple solo albums.  I happen to like Brendan Perry's songs as much as hers, though.  The lyrics are always good and there's more of a song structure.  His songs and hers complement each other.

Here's one of my favorites but it's hard to choose just one.  This gives a good introduction to the Lisa Gerrard side of the band.  If you want to try more go to Spotify and check out "The Host of Seraphim" or "The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove" for starters.

I'll start the ACL previews eventually but here's the band opening up for Temper Trap tonight.  It's a duo from San Diego.  They played SXSW and are now back.  Kinda fuzzy pop that reminds me a little of Dandy Warhols.  There's one other opener so they'll probably play 8:30 or so.  May be worth getting there early.

I'm going to skip the SXSW previews for today.  Instead, you may want to check out this band from England called Radiohead.  They've put out a few albums so you may have heard of them.  Apparently they are similar to Oasis and Blur so if you like them you make like these guys.  They play in town tonight so maybe we can pick up a cheap ticket and check them out.

As I like to repeat often, I saw these guys in 1995 opening for R.E.M.  It's a case of wishing you could go back in time knowing what you know now.  "The Bends" had been out for a few months but all anyone knew about them was "Creep".  Look at the setlist during that tour:

So by now you know Radiohead is coming to Austin. This is the opening band. I posted a song earlier that you should go hear. Here's another song that I have had on repeat all morning. Incredible album. As if there weren't enough reasons to be excited about that show.
